Flying Pigs Land At Drew Estate Retailers
Just in time for Father’s Day, Drew Estate has sent out a fresh batch of its elusive Flying Pig cigars, but you’ll have to visit an authorized Drew Diplomat retailer to get them. The unique, short-and-stumpy vitolas are available in five blends: Liga Privada No. 9, Undercrown Sun Grown.
According to Drew Estate, the Flying Pig shape was inspired by an old photograph from 1895 of a cigar salesman’s size selection case. It’s said to be a difficult shape for cigar rollers to produce, given its unique size and pigtail cap. All of the Flying Pig cigars now measure 3 15/16 inches by 60 ring gauge, though previous iterations have measured a slightly longer 4 1/8 inches.
Production for 2018 has been limited to 2,500 boxes of 12 Flying Pigs for each blend. Both Liga Privada smokes retail for about $15 per cigar, while the Undercrown Flying Pigs retail for $12.72. All five cigars are produced at La Gran Fabrica Drew Estate in Esteli, Nicaragua.
Liga Privada No. 9 wears a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, Brazilian Mata Fina binder and filler from Nicaragua and Honduras. The T52 blend is the same, save for the Habano-seed wrapper grown in Connecticut.
Undercrown Maduro (originally just Undercrown) has a similar binder and filler composition as Liga Privada, but wears a dark, Mexican San Andrés wrapper. As the story goes, the torcedores in the Drew Estate factory were smoking too many Liga Privadas, depleting the inventory of Connecticut wrapper. So the rollers used the same tobaccos found in the Liga Privada binder and filler, only from different vintages and primings on the plant. That factory cigar eventually became the original Undercrown.
the latest addition to the brand, is enrobed in an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper, with binder from the Connecticut River Valley and filler from Nicaragua.
